Basic Firearm Training
FIRST-TIME FIREARM OWNERSHIP OR PRIVATE FIREARM OWNERSHIP
U/S 117705 - Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No 60 OF 2000).
Purpose:
This unit standard is for persons who need to demonstrate
knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000),
herein after the Act that is applicable to legally possess a
firearm.
Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the statutory duties and obligations of firearm ownership as contained in the Act;
- Demonstrate understanding of the statutory prescriptions applicable to the possession, handling, carrying, storage and use of firearms as prescribed by the Act; and
- Demonstrate understanding of the statutory prescriptions applicable to the possession and storage of ammunition as prescribed by the Act.
U/S 119649 - Handle and use a Handgun
Purpose:
This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses a handgun or
who requires a Competency Certificate in terms of relevant
legislation.
Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Handling a handgun.
- Using a handgun.
- Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a handgun for safe use.

This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses self-loading
rifle or Carbine or who requires a Competency Certificate in
terms of relevant legislation.
Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Handling a self loading rifle or carbine.
- Using a self loading rifle or carbine.
- Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a self-loading rifle or carbine for safe use.
U/S 119651 - Handle and use a manually operated rifle.
Purpose:
This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses a manually
Operated rifle or carbine or who requires a Competency
Certificate in terms of relevant legislation.
Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Handling a manually operated rifle or carbine;
- Using a manually operated rifle or carbine;
- Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a manually operated rifle or carbine for safe use.

Purpose:
This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses a shotgun and
who Requires a Competency Certificate in terms of relevant
Legislation.
Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Handling a shotgun.
- Using a shotgun.
- Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a shotgun for safe use.
Business Purpose Training
SECURITY GUARDS AND ANYBODY ELSE WHO IS ISSUED WITH A COMPANY FIREARM
U/S 123511 - Handle and use a Self-loading rifle or carbine for Business Purposes
Purpose:
This unit standard applies to persons who will through the
application of knowledge of the relevant legislation, carry, .
handle, shoot and maintain a rifle or carbine for business
purposes.
Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.
- Operate a self-loading rifle or carbine in a business environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the self-loading rifle or carbine.
- Demonstrate knowledge of self-loading rifle or carbine under adverse conditions.
U/S - 123514 - Handle and use a Shotgun for Business Purposes.
Purpose:
This unit standard applies to persons who will through the
application of knowledge of the relevant legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a shotgun for business purposes. Benefit to society of this unit standard is that law enforcement personnel from both the private and public sectors will contribute to safety in society.

ultimately lead to the safe use of a shooting range as a primary
objective of this unit standard.
