What to do to obtain a competency certificate?

  • You must successfully pass the prescribed test to prove your knowledge of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000), as well as the prescribed training and practical test regarding the safe and efficient handling of a firearm at an accredited training provider.
  • The competency certificate remains valid for the same period of validity as the period determined in the Firearms Control Act, 2000, in respect of the license to which the competency relates.
  • A competency certificate must specify whether it relates to competency to
    • Possess a firearm
    • Trade in firearms
    • Manufacture firearms
    • Conduct business as a gunsmith.

To obtain a Competency certificate you must

  • Be 21 years old
  • Not have a substance-abuse problem.
  • Be a “fit and proper person” for the specific license.
  • Be stable and does not have a tendency for violence.
  • Not “become or been declared unfit to possess a firearm” within the five years preceding the application
  • Have no conviction within the five years preceding the application for crimes related to violence, dishonesty, recklessness or instability
  • Be a Citizen or permanent resident of South Africa.
  • Be in stable mental condition and does not have a propensity for violence
  • Does not suffer from a substance-abuse problem
  • Has not been served with a protection order or accused of domestic violence
  • Has not been denied a license, permit, or authorization for a firearm
  • Has not attempted suicide, suffered major depression or emotional problems, or had a substance-abuse problem
  • Has not been diagnosed or treated for depression, substance abuse, or behavior or emotional problems
  • Has not been reported to the police or social services for threatening or attempting violence or other conflict anywhere
  • That in the two years preceding the application the applicant did not go through a divorce or separation from a partner in which violence was alleged or
  • Was fired or laid off from his or her job.

To apply for a competency certificate in South Africa, you’ll need to provide the following documents:

Required Documents

2. Proof of residence: A certified copy of a utility bill or lease agreement showing your name and physical address.
3. Medical certificate: A medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner, stating that you are mentally and physically fit to possess a firearm.

How to obtain a Firearm License

If you want to own a firearm, you must undergo the training at an accredited institution and obtain a training proficiency certificate.

Firearm License Validity and Renewal

Validity period: Firearm licenses are typically valid for:

  • Restricted firearm for self-defense (Section 14): 2 years
  • Occasional hunting and sport-shooting (Section 15): 10 years
  • Dedicated hunting and/or dedicated sport shooting (Section 16): 10 years
  • Professional hunting (Section 16A): 10 years
  • Private collection (Section 17): 10 years
  • Ammunition in private collection (Section 18): 10 years
  • Public collection (Section 19): 10 years
  • Business purposes as game rancher and in hunting (Section 20): 10 years
  • Business purposes other than game rancher and in hunting (Section 20): 5 years

Renewal: You must renew your firearm license 90 days before it expires.

If a firearm license is cancelled, the former license holder must dispose of the firearm within 60 days.
